Campus Clutch Sparks a New Wave of Esports Energy at LASU

On November 8th, 2025, the atmosphere at Lagos State University (LASU) carried a different kind of excitement, not from a political rally or sports match, but from something far more modern and rapidly growing: esports. This was the third stop of the ENGY Campus Clutch Tour by Nexal Gaming, a nationwide movement dedicated to introducing Nigerian students to the rising world of competitive gaming and the opportunities it holds.

Earlier this year, Nexal Gaming had set out on a mission, an educational tour designed to equip students across Nigeria with knowledge about the esports industry, a sector growing faster than many traditional entertainment fields. At each school, the message remained constant: esports is no longer just about playing games; it is about communities, careers, creativity, and the future of digital entertainment in Africa.

When the tour finally arrived at LASU, it brought with it not only competition but a full cultural experience. For three days leading up to the physical event, students battled in online qualifiers. Then, on Friday, the campus came alive with the roar of players, spectators, creators, and curious first-timers who wanted to witness the new wave of gaming that had been sweeping across campuses nationwide.

The competition roster featured some of the most popular esports titles among students, like EAFC, Call of Duty Mobile, Free Fire, Efootball, and Chess. But what made the LASU stop stand out was a new addition to the tour: African-made video games. For the first time across all universities visited on the tour so far, Nexal Gaming introduced two homegrown titles to the lineup;  Kasala, created by Tepida Studio, and Football Mania by Markov AI. Indeed a reminder that “Made in Africa” now includes games ready for esports tournaments.Students from various departments showed up not only to play but to learn. Alongside the tournaments, gaming education sessions took place, offering insights into game development, esports careers, content creation, and how students can use their skills to enter the growing digital economy. It was clear that the goal wasn’t only to crown champions, but to open minds.

Nexal Gaming partnered with GetClub LASU and the Student Union Government to bring the event to life, ensuring smooth logistics, strong student turnout, and active participation from different faculties across the university. Hundreds of LASU students registered for the qualifiers, with even more showing up on the event day to support their friends and experience the atmosphere. The tour’s impact was amplified through additional partnerships with key industry players, like Ridima, ClapMi, Markov AI, the Esports Federation of Nigeria, Fourthwall Gaming, Red Earth Labs, Gameverse Africa, and Tepida Studio, all contributing in unique ways to make the ENGY Campus Clutch stop at Lagos State University a truly memorable and forward-thinking experience.

But beyond the excitement, the event highlighted a growing shift in campus culture. For a long time, gaming at Nigerian universities existed mostly as an informal activity. With Campus Clutch, that is beginning to change. Esports is becoming more organized, more recognized, and increasingly seen as a legitimate space for skill development and opportunity. Students are now discovering that gaming extends beyond play and into areas like game design, tournament operations, digital marketing, content creation, and other emerging career paths. By the time the final matches ended and the winners were celebrated, it was clear that something meaningful had taken place at LASU. The event brought students together, created new interest groups, and introduced many to African-made games for the first time in a competitive setting.

As December begins and the tour continues, the LASU stop stands out as a reminder of how much potential exists when students are given the right platform. Campus Clutch didn’t just host competitions,  it opened doors. And for many students at Lagos State University, November 8th marked a significant moment for esports on their campus.
