The partnership places the itel City 200 smartphone at the centre of a new comic story built around technology, youth, and African superhero storytelling.

Toon Central has announced a partnership with mobile technology brand itel as the title sponsor of City Hero, a new original comic series centred on a young African superhero story.

The collaboration brings together comic distribution, original IP development, and consumer technology, with the itel City 200 smartphone written into the origin story of the comic’s main character. According to the material shared with Nexal Gaming, City Hero follows Soma, a ten-year-old boy who receives an itel City 200 as a birthday gift from his father. The phone later connects with a mysterious wrist device called the Activian, unlocking abilities that change the direction of his life.

For Toon Central, the project represents a move beyond distribution into original story development. The platform has positioned itself within Africa’s comics space by supporting digital access and visibility for African comic creators, but City Hero presents a different step: building an original IP with a commercial partner involved from the start.

The partnership also shows how technology brands can engage with African pop culture through storytelling rather than traditional advertising alone. In City Hero, the itel City 200 is not simply presented as a background product or visual placement. It plays a direct role in the story, becoming part of Soma’s transformation and the wider superhero narrative.

This approach reflects a growing intersection between African comics, gaming, animation, mobile technology, and youth culture. Across the continent, smartphones have become important tools for entertainment, creativity, communication and digital access. By placing a mobile device at the centre of a superhero origin story, City Hero connects everyday technology with imagination and character-driven storytelling.

From a creative economy perspective, the collaboration may also serve as a model for how African content platforms can attract brand partnerships without separating commercial support from narrative development. For creators and publishers, this could open more conversations around IP funding, sponsored storytelling and long-term franchise building.

City Hero Chapter One introduces Soma’s journey, beginning with his birthday gift and the discovery of the Activian. The story also sets up a wider conflict, with a character named Oga Stan tracking the signal connected to Soma’s new abilities.

The first chapter of City Hero is now available on Toon Central.
