NESA Games 2025: UI vs UNIPORT is set to become one of the most exciting student esports events of the year, bringing together two prestigious Nigerian universities, the University of Ibadan and the University of Port Harcourt in a four-week competitive and educational gaming experience. Beginning on August 11, 2025, and running through early September, this tournament blends high-energy esports matches with gaming education and quiz challenges designed to both entertain and enlighten participants. With a grand prize pool of ₦300,000 and weekly leaderboard updates, students are encouraged not just to play, but to represent their schools with pride and purpose.
The tournament is organized by the Nexal Esports Student Association (NESA), a student-focused initiative powered by Nexal Gaming. NESA was created to sustain and grow the gaming communities established during the Engy Campus Clutch Tour hosted by Nexal Gaming. That tour introduced university students to the growing esports scene in Nigeria, and following its success, NESA Games was launched to maintain engagement, foster talent, and deepen student exposure to opportunities within the gaming and esports industry. This current initiative, UI vs UNIPORT, is the first in a series of inter-school tournaments that aim to combine competition with career exploration in esports.
Students can participate in both the Esports Competition and the Gaming Quiz + Esports Trivia Tournament. Here’s the breakdown:
Esports Titles (₦150,000 prize pool)

- Call of Duty Mobile (Battle Royale – DUO)
- Free Fire (Battle Royale – DUO)
- Online Chess (Separate Male & Female Categories)
Note: CODM and Free Fire players can register as a duo, so grab your gaming partner!
Gaming Quiz & Trivia (₦100,000 prize pool)

- Weekly quiz challenges based on gaming and Nigerian esports knowledge
- Delivered via Google Forms
- Participants must submit responses weekly
The Gaming Quiz and Esports Trivia competition aims to educate students on gaming history, esports culture, and the Nigerian Esports landscape. Each week, students will receive a Google Form containing a set of questions they must complete and submit. These questions will test both general gaming knowledge and specific aspects of the esports ecosystem, turning every participant into a more informed member of the gaming community. The dual-purpose nature of this tournament: competition and learning, ensures that all students, regardless of skill level, have something to gain from their participation.
Eligibility is restricted to currently enrolled undergraduate students from the University of Ibadan and the University of Port Harcourt. All participants will be ranked weekly on a leaderboard system using their Engy Africa usernames. Every Saturday, leaderboard updates will be shared publicly on Engy Africa, recognizing top performers in both the esports matches and quiz challenges. These weekly scores are not just about personal glory, they also contribute to each school’s overall performance. At the end of the four-week period, the school with the highest total accumulated points from all its student participants will be declared the overall winner of the NESA Games: UI vs UNIPORT tournament. The final prize pool will be awarded to the winning institution, symbolizing both achievement and school pride.
Games will be played remotely on mobile devices, making participation convenient and accessible. CODM and Free Fire players will use their mobile gaming apps to play scheduled matches, while Chess games will be coordinated through digital platforms. Each quiz question carries 2 marks, and students can earn bonus points based on how early they submit their answers:
- Monday submission: +5 bonus points
- Tuesday submission: +4 bonus points
- Wednesday submission: +3 bonus points
- Thursday submission: +2 bonus points
- Friday submission: +1 bonus point
This structure rewards both accuracy and promptness, helping to reduce cheating while encouraging consistency and participation. Match highlights, leaderboard announcements, and important updates will be streamed live on YouTube, with regular content shared on Nexal Gaming’s social media platforms.
The vision behind NESA Games is simple yet powerful: to educate students and create opportunities for them in the Esports industry. By combining a competitive format with weekly learning challenges, the event exposes students to the breadth of careers available within gaming, from content creation and tournament organizing to brand management and technical support. It also promotes digital literacy, teamwork, critical thinking, and school spirit.
For students looking to gain more than just trophies, for those seeking experience, exposure, and entry into one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, NESA Games: UI vs UNIPORT is the perfect starting point.
