What you need to know about CDL?
Call of Duty League known as CDL is a big event in the world, the main event is held in North America, it started around 2020 and it is an event stamped and organized by activision (the publishers of call of duty).
The CDL features 12 teams, each representing a different city. The teams compete in a series of regular-season matches throughout the year, culminating in a championship tournament.
The reigning CDL champions are Optic, a team known for their consistent performance and skilled players. Optic also represented in the Esports world cup having a good spell until losing to the eventual winners. Other notable teams in the CDL include 100 Thieves and Atlanta Faze, who have also achieved significant success in recent years.
Inception of CDL into Nigeria (Naija CDL)
The Nigerian Esports ecosystem has witnessed a significant milestone with the introduction of the Call of Duty League (CDL) through Kon10dr, a renowned tournament organizer.
Kon10dr is known for hosting tournaments across various game genres, hosting tournaments of over 5 million in 2023 according to Nexal report. Kon10dr has now brought this popular competitive shooter to the Nigerian esports scene.
The CDL tournament organized by Kon10dr offers a substantial prize pool of 450,000 Naira, with the first-place finisher receiving 300,000 Naira and the second-place finisher taking home 150,000 Naira.
This substantial reward pool is expected to attract top-tier Call of Duty players from across Nigeria, vying for the championship title and a share of the lucrative prize money.
At the end of the tournament, Mavic emerged the winner after running the whole tournament like a training session, without losing a single game map. They emerged the winner in the pre-season rounds and then went on to win the first edition of Naija CDL with 11-0 maps won.
They faced off EST in the final, and had a 5-0 win. At some point it felt like EST was going to win a map but ended up having nothing to show for their effort.
Significance of Naija CDL
The introduction of the CDL to Nigeria through Kon10dr marks a significant step forward for the Nigerian Esports ecosystem. It provides a platform for talented Call of Duty players to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level.
Additionally, it brings a popular and globally recognized esports league to Nigerian fans, further expanding the reach and popularity of competitive gaming in the country.
Naija CDL can only get better from here, we hope to see more competition and at some point see different states represented just like the CDL in the US. Maybe then the rivalry between Ibadan and Lagosians can be settled once and for all and so, bygone can be by guns (virtually).
