In what promises to be a landmark moment for both African esports and global pop culture, Nigerian creator and esports advocate Mavis Ibibere Lucky is preparing to break the Guinness World Record for the most selfies taken in three minutes, aiming for an ambitious 300 selfies at the Carry1st Africa Cup on August 31, 2025.

The current record stands at 184 selfies, but for the man behind this bold attempt, the target is about more than numbers. “Nigerians are incredibly competitive,” she said. “We want to show the world that we can outperform expectations when given the chance.”
A GAMER’S Influencer
The journey began in 2023 when she connected with Khoded, a Nigerian gamer who attempted multiple world records, including 100 hours of continuous gameplay, while raising funds for spinal cord injury victims. Managing Khoded’s attempts sparked a personal ambition.

“Working with Khoded motivated me to break a Guinness World Record myself,” she explained. This shows how inspiration can flow from others. “I had applied before but forgot about it. This time, I’m going all in.” Recounting her previous submission for a world record attempt
1 Record, 300 selfies, 3 mins
After studying footage of the current record holder, he developed a faster and more efficient approach. “I calculated the seconds per person and found ways to improve. On my own, I’ve already managed 524 pictures in one run. Now it’s about creating a system, keeping energy high, and making the moment unforgettable.” Mavis said. Her maths to create the most efficient and effective way to make the attempt a success is a confidence booster.
A Global Crowd – a Nigerian movement

While Guinness rules restrict the official attempt to on-site attendees, the campaign has gone global through mavisworldrecordselfies.com, where anyone worldwide can upload a selfie. Those photos will be part of memorabilia sent to the Guinness World Records Museum, with participants eligible to receive an official World Record Participant certificate.
“Selfies are personal and empowering,” she said. “It’s like a personal stamp of a moment in time one that you control. Including selfies from around the world makes this attempt a shared piece of history.” She does not just see it as a selfie, but a way for everyone to make history together in our own way.
Venue: Carry1st Cup Finals
Her choice of venue was deliberate. “Carry1st just gets it,” she said, praising the company’s commitment to community-driven African gaming. “Since meeting them in 2021, I’ve seen how they help Africa secure its place in the gaming industry.

Collaborating with them feels natural.”The event also coincides with Africa’s debut in the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship, making the moment doubly historic. “For the Nigerian players, this could be a morale booster breaking a world record and stepping onto the global stage in the same season.
A Message to Africa

At its core, the attempt carries a message for African creators, fans, and esports players: don’t wait for permission.“That we matter,” she said simply. “We have to create our own opportunities, present the image we want the world to see, and be audacious enough to make it happen. The world is watching.
