In the heart of Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, a young man named Oside Oluwole, also known as KHODED, has etched his name in the annals of gaming history. This biochemistry graduate from the Federal University Oye-Ekiti has always been passionate about soccer video games, particularly Dream League Soccer. But instead of just gaming for fun, Oside decided to turn his passion into a purpose. Here’s his incredible story of perseverance, dedication, and triumph.
The Dream Begins
Oside’s journey towards breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest videogame marathon playing Dream League Soccer began over three years ago. “I first applied to break the record about three years ago but was rejected,” he shares. Undeterred, he focused on finishing his studies. After his final exams, he reignited his dream, inspired by Hilda Baci’s cooking attempt, which fueled his determination to go all out this time. He reapplied under the existing category “Longest videogame marathon playing a football soccer game.“
Preparing for the Marathon
Preparing for such a monumental task was no easy feat. There were numerous requirements: independent witnesses, a dedicated team, financial support, gaming equipment, and stable electricity. “I had no sponsor as of a week to the event,” Oside recalls. But just when it seemed impossible, a philanthropist, Otunba Kunle Kalejaye SAN, Chairman/CEO of EagleFm102.5, stepped in. “This man single-handedly sponsored the event,” says Oside gratefully.
Choosing Dream League Soccer
Why Dream League Soccer? The Guinness World Records guidelines allowed only 20 seconds of rest after each match, which is the only time for substitutions or settings adjustments. Oside chose Dream League Soccer because he was so familiar with it that he could perform all necessary actions within the 20-second window.
The Attempt
The marathon itself was grueling. “It wasn’t an easy task; you can’t sleep, you can’t eat, you must be actively playing the game at all times,” Oside explains. This experience truly made him understand what a “marathon” means. The first 24 hours saw him taking just a 5-minute break. On the second day, he managed less than 20 minutes of rest. By the third day, he had accumulated enough rest to take a 45-minute break to eat and freshen up, but still, he didn’t use more than 90 minutes of accumulated rest in total.
The Challenges
Submitting evidence to Guinness World Records was another marathon in itself. “Gathering and submitting the evidence took me up to five months,” Oside notes. Any small mistake could lead to disqualification. Finally, in March 2024, Guinness World Records confirmed they had received all the evidence, with a review period of 12 to 16 weeks.
The Outcome
In July 2024, Oside’s record was officially recognized by Guinness World Records. Yet, despite this monumental achievement, he faced disappointment in raising funds for a local hospital, one of his primary motivations. “Unfortunately, the fundraising wasn’t successful due to lack of sponsors,” he laments.
Looking Forward
Despite the challenges, Oside remains optimistic. “As of now, I have nothing to show for this accomplishment except for the certification from GWR,” he admits. He hasn’t received any support or deals from any brand, but he remains hopeful and driven. Oside is already planning another record attempt and is seeking sponsors to achieve this new feat, with the application approval closing in October 2024.
Final Words
To fellow gamers and aspirants, Oside’s message is clear: “Keep doing what you know how to do best; it might take you somewhere someday. If anyone wishes to attempt other world records, they should reach out to me. I’m willing to be of great support.“
Oside Oluwole, aka KHODED, has shown that with determination, support, and a little bit of luck, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the spirit of gaming.
We at Nexal Gaming Company (NGC) salute his extraordinary achievement and look forward to seeing what he conquers next.
