Ibadan Gets Its Esports Home: EOD and Wave Gaming Hub Launch Esports Circle on August 16

EOD and Wave Gaming Hub will open Esports Circle, a new monthly gathering for Nigeria's esports and gaming community, at Café One inside The Palms Mall on Ring Road, Ibadan, on 16 August.  

​The sequencing is deliberate. "We believe community-led growth simply compounds better over time," the organizers told Nexal Gaming. They point to Lagos as precedent: CcHub gave Iyin Aboyeji and his co-founders a desk to work from years before Andela existed, and Aboyeji later founded Flutterwave off the back of that experience. Paystack emerged from that same Lagos moment, a different room but the same instinct of builders finding each other before the capital did.  

​The same logic, they argue, holds in football. Manchester United's pull was never really about eleven players on a pitch; it's that people who have never set foot in Manchester still call it their club and defend it like family.  

​"That's what community does before anything else. It creates belonging before it creates business."

​That belief extends to how EOD and Wave Gaming Hub frame Ibadan itself, not as a host city for esports events but as the intended base of the whole ecosystem. The comparison they draw is Dubai. In 1985, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum leased two second-hand aircraft and backed the venture with around ten million dollars, launching an airline years before Dubai had an aviation market to justify one. That decision helped turn Dubai into a global destination, not an accident of geography but a deliberate bet on infrastructure ahead of demand.  

​"We're borrowing that same instinct for Ibadan," the organizers said, pointing to the city's 16-plus tertiary institutions and a young, digitally fluent population as the raw material already​

Event Format & Vision

​The inaugural session, themed the Business of Esports, will open with a keynote on esports as decent work and part of the wider creative economy, rather than a hobby people eventually grow out of. Organizers are committing to the monthly cadence from day one.  

​"We're building the format and the room to earn that trust from this first session onward," they said, adding that attendance isn't limited to competitive players. "We're just as interested in helping people pivot into the industry from adjacent skills."  

​Esports Circle is open to players, competitive teams, content creators, developers, tournament organizers, journalists, investors, and anyone building a career in African gaming.
