GAMR has partnered with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) to launch the Summer Edition of Build Africa on Roblox, a fully funded scholarship program designed to take young Africans from Roblox players to paid game creators. Applications are now open till the 1st of September.
Main Details
The program is built around a "Player to Builder to Paid Creator" pathway, giving participants a structured route into the games industry rather than a one-off workshop. Over the course of the scholarship, participants will:
Learn Roblox Studio, Lua scripting, and world-building fundamentals
Build Afro-centric Roblox experiences
Work directly with mentors and other young creators
Launch their first playable project
Get exposure to AI tools for games and video creation
Unlock pathways to future creator and studio opportunities
The initiative is aimed squarely at addressing two gaps at once: giving young Nigerians hands-on technical skills in one of the world's most-played game creation platforms while pushing for more African-made content within Roblox's global ecosystem, a space still dominated by Western-built experiences.
As a full scholarship, the program removes cost as a barrier to entry, positioning it as an accessible on-ramp for aspiring developers who may not otherwise have access to formal game development training.
With applications open now, GAMR and LSETF are positioning the program as more than a training course framing it as a pipeline toward future creator and studio opportunities within Africa's growing games industry. The initiative adds to a broader pattern of institutional investment in African game development, arriving alongside other recent moves like Nigeria's national pavilion push at international gaming events.
