Faculty Rivalries Heat Up at Lagos State University as Engy Campus Clutch Arrives

The hum of excitement in Lagos State University has grown louder these past weeks. Posters and whispers across the campus all point toward one thing, the arrival of the Engy Campus Clutch, a nationwide university esports tour powered by ENGY Africa and organized by Nexal Gaming.

Now at its third stop, after successful activations in other Nigerian universities, the tour is igniting a new level of competitive passion in LASU. Hundreds of students across the faculties are once again filling the halls with excitement as they gather to compete, connect, and grow through esports. With support from GetClub (Gaming and Esports Technology Club LASU) and the LASU Student Union Body, this edition continues to strengthen the culture of gaming on campus, turning casual play into structured competition and collaboration that cuts across departments.

Competition with a Campus Twist

Each faculty has its own pool of gamers, and every student has a fair chance to represent their department. Through the qualifiers, players compete for spots on their faculty team, a system that gives talented students across LASU the opportunity to showcase their skills and earn recognition.

The Engy Campus Clutch is built on that structure of fairness and representation. It gives every gamer a clear pathway into organized competition, encouraging faculties to form rosters, practice together, and compete with pride.

From Agriculture  to Social Sciences, Law to Arts, the rivalries are friendly but fierce. The excitement builds as qualified players prepare to step into the LASU Arcade Chamber, ready to carry their faculty’s name through every round of the tournament.

Adding a Nigerian Game to the Line-Up

A major highlight for LASU is the inclusion of “KASALA”, a Nigerian fighting game developed by Tepida Studio. The game brings a local touch to the tournament lineup and represents a growing effort by Nexal Gaming to support and distribute locally developed titles within the Nigerian market.

“KASALA” joins other competitive titles on the roster, including:

  • Call of Duty Mobile (CODM)
  • EA FC
  • Chess
  • Efootball
  • Free Fire

Each game carries a ₦100,000 prize pool, bringing the total to ₦600,000 for the LASU edition. For students, the attraction isn’t only the prizes, it’s the recognition that their skills can earn them respect within their faculties and across the university.

Partners Behind the Tournament

The LASU leg of the tour comes with strong backing from partners across gaming, media, and technology.

The Esports Federation of Nigeria (EFN) stands behind the initiative, aligning it with national efforts to grow esports at the grassroots level. Ridima, the fintech partner, powers digital transactions and rewards for participants. Media visibility is supported by Red Earth Labs and ThisDay Newspaper, while Clapmi takes on the role of official streaming partner, ensuring matches are broadcast live for students and fans who can’t make it to the venue. Goondu Interactive Studio and Tepida Studio serve as game studio partners, with Gameverse Africa as the educational partner connecting the event to broader opportunities in game design and digital skills.

On campus, the Office of the Sports Director, LASU Student Union provides coordination and logistics, and Fourthwall Gaming Lounge contributes the setup expertise to deliver a high-quality competitive experience.

Community and Campus Culture

What’s been most noticeable at LASU is the way students from different backgrounds have come together through the event. Engineering students are scrimming against law students; gamers who had only met online are now competing side by side on campus.

The faculty-based structure adds friendly tension to the event, players aren’t just representing themselves but carrying their departments’ pride. It’s sparked debates in lecture halls, training sessions in lounges, and a sense of playful rivalry across the school.

For many students, the Engy Campus Clutch is their introduction to the world of organized esports. For others, it’s a chance to compete seriously and gain visibility among gaming organizations and media partners watching closely.
