DR SID UNVEILS THE ₦80,000,000 NAIRA KON10DR ESPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026

Kon10dr in partnership with ProvidusUnity Bank has announced the 2026 Kon10dr Esports Championship for December 18 and 19 with a ₦80,000,000 prize pool spread across five titles. Sixteen million naira each. Nothing in Nigerian esports has ever come close.

The prize pool is the largest in Nigeria's esports space, and registration is expected to open on kon10dr.gg.

The five titles

Three mobile, two console and Kon10dr has built the lineup accordingly.

The pool is flat across all five. Same ₦16 million whether you're a solo player on a pad or a five-man roster on mobile. For the FC and Mortal Kombat competitors, that's a serious individual payday. For the MLBB, CODM and Free Fire sides, it's ₦16 million entering an organisation, which in this market funds a roster, a coach and a full season with room left over. Both are things the ecosystem has been short of.

Celebrity teams

The other half of the announcement is ownership.

Kon10dr began revealing celebrity-owned teams at Lagos Games Week in June, at the National Theatre. Don Jazzy and Seyi Awolowo were named in the opening wave, with Cade Esports and Gameevo involved on the partnership side. More names are still to come.

Whatever the final roster of owners looks like, the June announcement was worth noting for who was in the room. Dr Sid, Kon10dr COO Tosin Odunlami, Kunmi Adenipebi from Gameevo, Cade Esports CEO Chima Paulson Chima and Seyi Awolowo, all on the same programme. Entertainment money and tournament operations don't usually share a stage here.

Elsewhere in the world, celebrity ownership has taken regional leagues mainstream in a matter of months. Nigeria has never lacked the cultural firepower for that. What it lacked was somebody building the structure to plug it into.

Four championships in

The 2021 edition is still the one people bring up. Landmark Events Centre, around 350 gamers flown into Lagos, Tekken and Mortal Kombat and Call of Duty and FIFA 22 running in front of a live crowd, ₦26 million on the line. That was the first time a Nigerian esports event looked like a broadcast product rather than a community meetup.

The second, in December 2022, went fully online ahead of the general elections. ₦10 million. The pool was smaller, but the field wasn't — 48 CODM qualifiers, 30 for Mortal Kombat 11, 26 for Free Fire, 11 for Brawl Stars, and Guilty Gear Strive on top. Changing format that late and still pulling those numbers said something about how deep the qualifier system already ran.

Then a tighter edition at Alliance française, Ikoyi, at ₦5 million.

And now ₦80 million.

What they were doing in between

The flagship going quiet for a while gave people the impression Kon10dr had gone quiet too. It hadn't.

The CODM Africa Super League ran across two months in 2022, ₦1 million over three divisions, 30 teams including the first nuke anyone had landed in a Kon10dr competition. The Free Fire qualifier series fed the KEC leaderboard on a 1–18 points ladder, which is the same system running the road to December right now.

After that came the national-level work. Kon10dr organised the Road to Riyadh: National Qualifiers with the Nigeria Esports Federation, opening a route from domestic competition into international circuits, and when Cade Esports pulled together the coalition that became Nigeria's National Team Partner for the first Esports Nations Cup, Kon10dr was part of it.

Five years of leagues, qualifiers and federation work sits underneath the December announcement.

About the number

Worth saying plainly: ₦80 million is harder to raise now than ₦26 million was in 2021, and every organiser reading this knows exactly why.

Venue costs, production, hardware, talent fees — all of it has moved, and moved sharply. Putting this much behind a single event in 2026 took real commitment from Kon10dr and whoever is backing them, at a point when doing less would have been the safe play. That's the part of the announcement that should register with anyone who has tried to fund an event here.

Qualifying

The Kon10dr Weekly Series started in March and has been running since, on the kon10dr.gg platform that launched in February. That's the qualification route, and it's live now.

Which is the practical takeaway for players. December is two days, but the road to it has been open since spring and there are still months of it left. Sign up this week and you have time to build a case for a seat.

Dr Sid told us in 2022 that the whole point of Kon10dr was to get players competing at a professional level and to make content people would actually want to watch.
