The regional rivalry is about to reach a fever pitch. This July, 43Esports is set to host The Niger Delta Derby, a high-stakes, state-versus-state showdown featuring the absolute best gaming talent from Rivers State and Bayelsa State.
Billed under the ultimate tagline “Two States. One Top Team,” the event promises to be a massive cultural and competitive milestone for the local gaming community.
The Elite Selection: Sourcing from the RSL
Securing a spot in this derby is no easy feat. According to tournament insiders, the roster selection relies heavily on the structural backbone of the Rivers Skirmish League (RSL).
The RSL is divided into three competitive divisions, and players for the Niger Delta Derby are being meticulously handpicked based on their official rankings.
The Elite: Selection starts at the very top. Organizers are scanning the highest tier, the Elite, to pull eligible players; players like Peejay are set to be participating. For instance, with two out of the top five players in the current Elite residing in Bayelsa, the talent pool is already locking in top-tier heavyweights.
League: While the top two or three finishers in these divisions are given the ultimate nod to represent, they carry the immense pressure of defending their home turf on a national stage.
The 5th Man: The Wildcard Factor
While performance in the RSL secures the core foundation of each team, a unique twist has been introduced for the final roster spot.
Each state will be represented by a 5-player squad, but only four players are chosen directly through the standard qualification process. To complete the lineup, a single wildcard player will be brought on board.
The Twist: The ultimate power lies in the hands of the competitors. The four already-chosen players from each state will have the exclusive responsibility to scout, debate, and handpick the final 5th player to join their ranks. This ensures team chemistry is locked in before they hit the grand stage.
The Rule: To participate, a player must either be an indigenous native of the state or a verified current resident.
To ensure zero loopholes, organizers are taking a hardcore approach to verification:
NIN Proof: Players must prove their ethnicity and regional status using their National Identification Number (NIN).
No Outside Elements: The rules strictly bar occupants from other states. Even if a top-tier player from a different region currently resides in Rivers or Bayelsa, they are completely ineligible to play. This ensures that the clash remains strictly between the true sons and daughters of Rivers and Bayelsa.
